When I was first approached to do a Monona Photoshoot, I was excited but equally nervous. It was my first time working in a fashion studio setting, and I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn. The purpose of this shoot was to create a series of fashion images that would capture the essence of the Monona brand. However, I faced several challenges right from the start
To begin with, my initial setup was far from ideal. I struggled with poor lighting, and the absence of experienced models only added to the difficulty. Most critically, I lacked experience in fashion photography, which became apparent as I attempted several static shots that didn’t meet the standards I had envisioned. Realizing the importance of proper lighting, I decided to invest in some equipment that would help bring my vision to life. Being that I was in Mexico City, I had availability of photography stores, however the prices were at least 2 or 3 times the market value if I were to cross the border in the USA. I bit my lip and bought an over-priced cheap flash by Yongnou.
Securing models proved to be another hurdle. After multiple failed attempts, I was fortunate enough to get my good friend, Paty Bermudez, to step in as a model. We have been working together on a pilot we’ve been filming and I’ve been fortunate enough to be doing the BTS, interviews and general gaffering needed on set. Anyhow, back to Paty, her enthusiasm and energy brought a new dimension to the shoot. Additionally, I had the support of a talented hair and make-up artist, who played a crucial role in ensuring that everything looked just right. Unfortunately, her name escapes me, but her contribution was invaluable.
With the right team in place and the lighting issues resolved, we were able to conduct a productive session. Over the course of a few hours and nearly 600 photographs later, we managed to capture some incredible shots. The experience taught me a lot about the importance of preparation, the value of a supportive team, and the challenges of fashion photography.
I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this project. It was a team effort, and without their support, this photoshoot would not have been possible.
Please feel free to check out the photos from that session here.
